College Course Just the Business for Alumni Kerry

Stoke on Trent College alumna Kerry Smith believes that studying at the College gave her the perfect springboard for a successful career in business.

Kerry completed the GNVQ Advanced Business Studies programme at the Cauldon campus in 1999, and after continuing her studies at Staffordshire University, she is now the Interim Chief People Officer at the North Staffordshire Combined NHS Trust.

She had always aspired to a role in business, but her college experience allowed her to explore specialties including marketing, communications, finance, and human resources.

“I was always interested in the different facets that make a successful business and wanted to understand them more. I decided to apply for the course at Stoke on Trent College to help me progress my career and academic aspirations,” Kerry shared.

Breaking Barriers in Business

“To be successful in a competitive employment market—and break through the glass ceiling as a woman in a male-dominated environment—I knew I’d need a degree to reach my full potential.”

Ultimately, Kerry found that her strengths aligned best with a career in HR. Today, she is responsible for all staffing at the Trust, leading on HR, recruitment, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), as well as clinical education and widening participation initiatives.

Speaking about her role, Kerry said: “It’s a privilege and honour to support Trust staff to be the best versions of themselves, to grow and develop to deliver outstanding care to our service users.”

Embracing Diversity

Kerry fondly recalls meeting fellow students from different cultures and backgrounds during her time at the College. Those experiences helped her build appreciation for diverse perspectives and guided her towards her chosen path in human resources.

A memorable highlight from her studies was a project where students developed their own business:

“We came up with the idea to design and sell cushions. We were supported by leaders from a local employer, and the venture turned out to be very successful; our cushions even made a profit selling locally,” Kerry explained.

Memories That Last

Outside of the classroom, Kerry made lasting friendships and cherished experiences.

“I had many great nights out with college friends and made treasured memories. Those moments supported my transition into adulthood and helped me navigate life as a young adult,” she said.

“I’m immensely proud to say I was a student at Stoke on Trent College all those years ago. Without my experience at the College, I’m sure I wouldn’t be in the privileged position I am today.”

Words of Wisdom

Kerry also shared advice for current students aspiring to careers in HR or business:

“Aim high, work hard, and build a diverse network of friends and colleagues. Be brave—lean into new experiences and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve if you put your mind to it. Most of all, believe in yourself and seek help from peers; there are plenty of people who’ve walked in your shoes and are willing to support you.”
