Stoke on Trent College Learners Set Off for Life‑Changing Challenge South Africa 2026

Stoke on Trent College has officially launched the 2026 Challenge South Africa expedition, sending a new cohort of learners to Cape Town as the College marks 21 years of this life-changing international enrichment programme.

More than 20 students will participate in the 10‑day experience, gaining first‑hand insight into South Africa’s culture, history and communities. The programme follows nine months of preparation, including weekly development sessions, residential team‑building activities, and a series of student‑led fundraising events.

The Challenge South Africa programme is designed to build confidence, adaptability, compassion and raise global awareness, offering students powerful learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

At this year’s farewell event, former participant Tom Pond (2017) spoke about the positive impact of the Challenge South Africa programme on both his personal development and his career.

“It’s one of those trips that doesn’t just stay in your memories – it stays with you in the way you think, the way you act, and ultimately the life you go on to build.”

Tom reflected on key moments including visiting township communities, working with a food‑bank project and learning about apartheid during a visit to Robben Island.

“Seeing the reality of daily life for families living in extreme poverty was humbling, it reminded me how much we often take for granted.”

Tom now works as a Wellbeing Team Leader at Dougie Mac Hospice, applying the confidence and resilience he gained through the programme.

Dave Hopley, Assistant Principal – Student Experience at Stoke on Trent College, said:

“Challenge South Africa continues to be one of the most powerful and transformative opportunities we offer our learners. It helps them develop confidence, independence and a deeper sense of global awareness that stays with them throughout their lives. We are incredibly proud of this year’s cohort and excited to see how this experience shapes their futures.”

With experiences ranging from school‑based sports delivery to community engagement and cultural learning, Challenge South Africa remains a cornerstone of the College’s enrichment offering – helping young people develop the skills, perspective and character needed for their next steps.
