To enrol onto this apprenticeship, you must have an employer who is willing to support you throughout the duration of your training and end point assessment.

The Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship prepares individuals for careers in the maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy vehicles, such as trucks, buses, agricultural equipment, and construction machinery.

The apprenticeship focuses on the following course content:

Knowledge
Vehicle Systems
- Engines: Combustion, fuel injection, turbochargers, cooling, and lubrication systems.
- Steering and Suspension: Types of suspension, alignment, and stability systems.
- Brakes: Pneumatic and hydraulic braking systems, including ABS and EBS.
- Transmission Systems: Manual and automatic gearboxes, drive shafts, and axles.
- Electrical Systems: Wiring diagrams, batteries, sensors, and diagnostic tools.
- Hydraulic Systems: Pumps, cylinders, and maintenance of hydraulics used in lifting and braking.
Industry-Specific Knowledge
- Diagnostics: Using tools and software for fault detection and resolution.
- Regulations: Health & safety, environmental policies, and legal requirements like MOT inspections or vehicle compliance.
- Emerging Technology: Hybrid and electric vehicle technology.
- Customer Service: Communicating effectively with clients about faults and repairs.

Skills
Diagnose and repair faults in:
- Engines (e.g., overheating, misfiring).
- Electrical systems (e.g., lights, starters, alternators).
- Braking systems (e.g., pneumatic leaks, worn pads).

The End Point Assessment for the apprenticeship consists of a multiple choice exam, practical task observations and a professional discussion.

How Is It Taught

During the practical period, you will attend college one day a week and for the remaining part of your contracted hours, will be in the workplace building on your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
