Course Summary

This course is for you if you want to have a career in Hairdressing. You will build on your knowledge of the many different aspects of hairdressing through a combination of practical skills and theoretical knowledge. You will train and complete all assessments in the commercial salons and have opportunity to attend a wide range of enrichment activities including experience of work. Optional units may change to meet employer requirements

Course Requirements

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade 3 / D or above. BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma, appropriate NVQ Level 1, or another relevant Level 1 or Foundation qualification. You will have a pre induction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

How Is It Assessed

The assessment process involves the collection of e-portfolio or paper based portfolio evidence which may take the form of practical observations, questioning, online tests, projects, assignments and case studies. You will be meeting and working with members of the public and will need to provide a number of paying clients for practical assessment purposes, you will participate in experience of work.

How Is It Taught

A variety of teaching methods will be used through your training, including practical skills demonstrations, classroom teaching, workshops, role play, discussion and work packs. Some independent study is required for which guidance is given. Practical skills and assessments are carried out on commercial clients within the new purpose built industry standard salon facilities.

What Could I do Next

Upon completion of NVQ Level 2 you may progress onto NVQ Level 3, an Advanced Apprenticeship or employment.

What Else Do I Need To Know

This is a vocational course giving you the training and skills needed for employment, good punctuality and attendance is essential. To comply with industry and awarding body standards for commercial salons, you will be required to purchase a salon uniform and equipment which is available by mail order, an order form will be provided. The recommended salon uniform needs to be worn at all times during practical and commercial salon sessions. A professional appearance is necessary with a good standard of personal hygiene and you will need to be willing to receive and carry out the treatments for which you are training. Some courses have trips or visits which may have a cost attached. You will also have the opportunity to be entered in national skills competitions representing the College in which there have been many successful outcomes for the College. Optional units may change depending on employer requirements. When carrying out independent study and e-learning you will be able to use the College Learning Resource Centres, where you can access computers, text books DVD’s and other learning materials.
