Course Summary

The aim of the course is to gain a broad understanding in Biomedical Science enabling progression to a variety of HE qualifications or direct employment into related medical fields e.g. paramedics, hospital laboratories and operating theatres, radiography and nursing.
You will study a variety of units and modules that include :
Principles and Applications of Science I and II
Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
Scientific Investigation Skills
Laboratory Techniques and their Application
Contemporary Issues in Science
Investigative Projects
Physiology of Human Body Systems
Human Regulation and Reproduction
Biomedical Science
Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
Genetics and Genetic Engineering
Disease and Infection

Course Requirements

Entry Requirements

Ideally 4 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above which includes a single science or combined science and 4/3 combination of maths and English. However we will consider each application on an individual basis.

How Is It Assessed

This is mainly coursework based however there are several units which are external exams throughout the two years which you need to pass to achieve your qualification. The main forms of coursework assessment are written assignments, assessed practicals and PowerPoint presentations.

How Is It Taught

This course is taught through a mixture of classes, online learning, lab practicals and project work. There are also some field trips and company visits. This is a 34 week full time course with about 16 hours per week. You are also expected to do assignment work in your own time.

What Could I do Next

On successful completion of this course you are able to progress on to higher education for a Degree or HND in Medical Science, Psychology, Forensics, Criminology, or to employment in a wide range of Medical Science based careers.

What Else Do I Need To Know

You will study GCSE maths and English alongside if you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above in these subjects Please note: It takes 2 years to complete this full Level 3 qualification. Progression to the second year of the course is subject to successful achievement of the first year of the course.
