Course Summary

To enrol onto this apprenticeship, you must have an employer who is willing to support you throughout the duration of your training and end point assessment.

This apprenticeship will provide you with the foundational skills and knowledge required to work in the construction industry as professional carpenter or joiner. We offer two routes: site carpentry and architectural joinery.

The course covers the following content:

Knowledge

Health and Safety
- Key legislation, safe working practices, and risk assessments.
Technical Knowledge
- Properties and uses of timber and other materials.
- Techniques for cutting, shaping, and assembling wood and related materials.
Tools and Equipment
- Use, maintenance, and storage of tools like saws, chisels, planes, and power tools.
Construction Principles
- Building techniques, structural integrity, and installation methods.
- Reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.

Skills
Core Carpentry and Joinery Skills
- Cutting, shaping, and assembling woodwork.
- Installing features such as skirting boards, door frames, and roofing components.
Problem-Solving
- Addressing unexpected challenges on-site or in the workshop.
- Precision and Attention to Detail
- Ensuring components meet exact specifications.
Teamwork and Communication
- Collaborating with colleagues, contractors, and clients to complete projects.

Entry Requirements

GCSE Grade 3 or above in English or Maths, or equivalent qualifications.

How Is It Assessed

The End Point Assessment for the apprenticeship consists of a multiple choice test, interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence and a practical assessment with questions.

How Is It Taught

During the practical period, you will attend college one day a week and for the remaining part of your contracted hours, will be in the workplace building on your knowledge, skills and behaviours.

Once completed, you may wish to consider the Level 3 Craft Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship which could then lead into construction management courses to support your progression.

What Else Do I Need To Know

You will be assigned a Skills Coach who will visit and support you in the workplace and complete progress reviews in preparation for your End Point Assessment.
