Stoke on Trent College provides a unique combination of skills to all our students, to ensure work-readiness when they complete their course.
Naturally, each student learns specific skills for the workplace through the vocational qualification they study, be it a construction trade, engineering, IT or catering qualification. They will also continue to develop their English and maths skills as part of their learning; English and maths qualifications are vital for getting a job and increase earning potential.
In addition to this they’ll also develop general employability skills, so that whatever sector they choose to work in, they’ll be equipped with skills that make them employable – skills like communication and numeracy, familiarity with IT, CV writing and interview skills.
Finally, what sets our students apart is that we help them to understand and develop the attributes and mindsets that we know employers are looking for – reliability and honesty, respect for others, punctuality and meeting deadlines, amongst others. Students work with our Job Shop team to develop these ‘unwritten’ attributes which help them to stand out from the crowd in the employment market.
The Job Shop team work with students to help them find part-time work during their course and full-time work afterwards, so that their college experience is one that genuinely puts them on the road to a future career. A Work Ready+ card is awarded to all students who meet the criteria for work readiness.
All students will undertake work experience as part of their Study Programme. This enables them to apply the knowledge and skills gained on their course in a real work environment, giving practical, hands-on experience. It gives students the opportunity to show employers that they are keen to progress and enhances CVs for future employment. The Work Experience Co-ordinators at the College will help and guide each student with their placement and liaise with potential employers.
